Silence Squeaky Door Hinges With the Right Oil

One hinge chirps every time someone hits the bathroom. WD-40 from 2014 is not a hinge diet — it washes dirt in, then dries sticky. A thin PTFE oil or silicone spray on the right spot usually ends the noise in minutes.

Find the noisy hinge

Open the door slowly. Press each hinge knuckle lightly with a finger while moving. The one that changes pitch is the culprit — often the top hinge on a heavy door.

Tighten loose screws first. A loose leaf rubbing metal-on-metal squeaks even when “oiled.”

Lubricate without painting the door

Put a cloth under the hinge to catch drips.
Open the door fully. Drip 2–3 drops of PTFE / 3-in-1 style oil into the top of each hinge knuckle where the pin enters.
Swing the door 20 times. Wipe squeeze-out immediately.
If silent: stop. If still loud, lift the pin slightly (see below).

Avoid thick grease that attracts grit on interior painted doors. Graphite powder works on some locks but makes a gray mess on white trim.

Stubborn pins

Open door. Tap the hinge pin up from below with a nail set and hammer — small taps.
Pull the pin halfway, wipe it clean, add a film of oil, reseat.
Do one hinge at a time so the door does not drop off the remaining pins.

If the pin is bent or the knuckles do not line up, oil will not fix geometry — replace the hinge.

Mistakes

Soaking the hinge until oil runs onto carpet.
Using cooking oil (goes rancid and sticky).
Ignoring screws that spin in stripped wood — use a longer screw into the stud on the jamb side.

When to stop

Stop if the door rubs the frame (alignment job), if hinge leaves are cracked, or if this is a fire-rated door with restricted hardware. Exterior rusty hinges may need replacement, not perfume.
